Yu Cheng (b. Harbin, China and now based in Boston) holds a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (2021) and an MFA in Studio Art (2024) from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. She utilizes oil, acrylic, and graphite as her mediums to explore the fleeting moments in everyday life, attempting to record the trace of time by capturing the beauty of the present moment. During her graduate studies, Yu has been awarded the Summer Domestic Travel Grant, Dan Pond Competition, Dean’s Research Award, and Graduate Student Research Competition. Her work is displayed at the Boston Children’s Museum as an art contest winner.
She believes that an artist is someone who creates challenges and actively seeks solutions. This ongoing cycle of posing questions and seeking answers has become a fundamental part of her career aspirations.
The act of creation serves as a method of self-exploration, allowing her to gain a deeper understanding of who she is. As she embarks on the creative process, she introduces images into my mind and progressively refines her comprehension of the challenges, taking steps forward. Creating art is her way of delving into self-discovery, and each work guides Yu toward the place where it is meant to exist.
Through her art, Yu invites viewers to appreciate the beauty of simplicity and the ordinary aspects of life and to seek the beauty that can be found in everyday moments, encouraging them to slow down and appreciate the world around them.
